# What's the relationship between grants & individual giving?

Grantmakers sometimes tell themselves that grant funding works in a complementary way to individual giving. The organisations that have difficulty fundraising from individuals - those who work on ‘unpopular’ causes, or don’t have capacity to invest in direct marketing, professional fundraisers etc. - are more likely to receive grant support, because we make strategic, not emotional investments.

Is this true?
