PATCH - adding country names alongside country codes

Hello,

The ODS and 360Giving staff teams are proposing a PATCH update to the Standard which adds country names to the “Title” column in the countryCodes.csv codelist file.

No validation rules are changing, and publishers will still be expected to use codes drawn from the codelist in their data. This change makes it easier for data users and software tools including GrantNav to automatically display a human-friendly country name in interfaces.

Other codelists in the 360Giving Data Standard use the “Title” column to this effect e.g. regrantType.csv

  • Code: FRG010
  • Title: “Common Regrant”

The “Title” column in countryCodes.csv is currently unused, meaning there are no semantic changes to the codes. As well as the technical benefits, we believe adding a human-readable title also brings the countryCodes.csv codelist in line with other codelists.

In the Standard, countryCode.csv takes country codes from ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes. This standard also provides an “English short name” for countries, which we have used in this PATCH to add the country names to the codelist file. We acknowledge that this list of country names is not value-neutral, however we feel that it is congruent with our current practice since the names are part of the same standard we use for the country codes themselves.

In recognition of the low impact that PATCH changes can have on the whole Standard, if no objections are received within one week, the PATCH change will be considered approved.
